Hyper Contemporary

January 15 – April 4, 2022

Opening Reception: 6PM - 9PM, Saturday, January 15

The digital age continues to influence our collective understanding of the future by testing our perception of reality and acquisition of reliable information in the moment. Artists are cultivating this unique condition with a visual sensibility that we might call 'hyper-contemporary'. That is, loosely put, creating art around concepts of a present futurism and a sense of chaos or discomfort inspired by subtle distortions or perversions of the familiar representation world. Like a view through a funhouse mirror, these perceived realities are warped and unfaithful: unexpectedly familiar while questioning the integrity of the mirror itself. With its digital and figurative sensibilities, much of the work recalls the concept of the ‘uncanny valley,’ a purgatory between simulacra and abstraction where minor twists of reality and representation have the potential to be the most unsettling and provocative.

The show features 16 artists from 9 countries, across 4 continents, expressing localized visions of the increasingly tangled fabric of space, time, and self. Each artist arrives at a unique local reality which is augmented by technology before it is processed by our perceptual faculties. Recognizing how regional histories build on and alter these global conditions, the show reaches for a geographically and culturally diverse set of practitioners to attempt to triangulate and focus in on the larger condition. Though many of the works are figurative, often portraits, the exhibition as a whole lives as a reflected meta-portrait of our contemporary complexion.
